What is Canada Express Entry and who is it for
Express Entry is Canada’s federal skilled-immigration application management system. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the system ranks candidates by their CRS score and invites the highest-scoring profiles to apply for permanent residence (PR) through invitation rounds (ITA).
Express Entry manages three streams: CEC (Canadian experience), FSW (Federal Skilled Worker), and FST (Federal Skilled Trades). In 2026, Canada prioritizes category-based draws in shortage sectors such as healthcare, STEM, trades, and French, along with new categories.

The three Express Entry streams
Express Entry brings together three federal programs. M2W specialists determine the stream that best fits your profile.
CEC
Canadian Experience Class
For those who already have skilled work experience in Canada (usually via a work permit or study abroad).
FSW
Federal Skilled Worker
For skilled workers outside Canada, assessed by points and experience; the most popular option for Vietnamese applicants.
FST
Federal Skilled Trades
For skilled tradespeople (mechanics, electricians, welders, construction, etc.) who meet the skill and language requirements.
CRS scores and 2026 category-based draws
The CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) awards points for age, education, language, experience, and adaptability factors. In each round, the highest-scoring profiles are invited. In 2026, IRCC prioritizes invitations by shortage sector:
- Healthcare and social services
- STEM (engineers, cybersecurity, etc.)
- Trades (carpenters, plumbers, mechanics, etc.)
- French language proficiency
- New categories in 2026: physicians, transport trades, researchers/senior managers (minimum 1 year of experience required)
The Express Entry process
Express Entry operates on a profile system with regular invitation rounds.
Step 1 — Assess skills, language & ECA
Take a language test (IELTS/CELPIP or TEF/TCF) and complete an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) if you studied outside Canada.
Step 2 — Create your Express Entry profile
Complete your profile online; the system calculates your CRS score and ranks you within the candidate pool.
Step 3 — Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
When your score meets the cut-off for a draw (general or category-based), you receive an ITA.
Step 4 — Submit your PR application & landing
Submit a complete permanent residence application; once approved, the whole family receives PR and enters Canada.
Costs and processing time
Express Entry costs include: language test fees, the Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) fee, the application and Right of Permanent Residence fees to IRCC, medical exams, criminal record checks, and service fees. After receiving an ITA and submitting a complete application, IRCC has a target processing standard of about 6 months. See the cost structure on the pricing page.
Comparing Express Entry and PNP
The two main PR pathways in Canada. Many applicants combine both to maximize their chances.
| Express EntryViewing | PNP (Provincial Nominee Program) | |
|---|---|---|
| Granted by | Federal (IRCC) | Province/territory + federal |
| Mechanism | CRS scoring, invitations by round | Provincial nomination based on demand |
| Score advantage | Category-based draws | +600 CRS when nominated |
| Residency obligation | Outside Quebec, flexible | Linked to the nominating province |
| Outcome | Permanent PR | Permanent PR |
Frequently asked questions about Express Entry
How many CRS points does it take to get an invitation?
The threshold changes each round and each category-based group. Higher-scoring profiles are invited first; a provincial nomination (PNP) adds +600 points, making an invitation nearly certain.
Do I need to take the IELTS test?
Language proficiency must be proven on the CLB scale via IELTS/CELPIP (English) or TEF/TCF (French). Strong French is prioritised through category-based draws.
What is an ECA?
ECA (Educational Credential Assessment) evaluates foreign credentials for equivalency to Canadian standards — required for education obtained outside Canada in order to score education points.
Does the whole family get PR?
Yes. Spouses and dependent children are included in the same application and receive PR together.
How long does it take to get PR?
After receiving the ITA and submitting a complete application, Express Entry has a target processing standard of about 6 months. M2W estimates a specific timeline based on your profile.
