The ANZSCO occupation code is the starting point of every Australian skilled settlement application. Identifying the correct occupation code determines whether you are eligible and which assessing authority you must submit your application to.
What Is the ANZSCO Occupation Code
ANZSCO is the standard occupation classification system for Australia and New Zealand. Each occupation is assigned a code along with a description of duties and specific skill requirements.
This is the common language that immigration authorities and skills assessing bodies use to evaluate applications.
Why the ANZSCO Code Matters
The occupation code determines three things: whether the occupation is on an eligible list, which authority assesses the skills, and the accompanying conditions. Choosing the wrong code can cause the entire application to be rejected.
The occupation code is also directly related to Core Skills Occupation List currently in force.
How to Determine Your Occupation Code
Theo the Australian Department of Home Affairs, you need to compare your actual duties against the ANZSCO description, not just rely on your job title.
Two people with the same job title but different duties may fall under two different occupation codes.
Next Steps
After determining the correct code, you submit your application to the corresponding skills assessing authority. This is a requirement before creating an expression of interest.
