German citizenship is now within reach much faster thanks to the amended Nationality Act, effective from June 27, 2024. The biggest change is a shortened naturalization timeline and the ability to hold dual citizenship, which is very significant for Vietnamese people.
What’s New in Germany’s Nationality Law
Theo the Federal Ministry of the Interior of Germany (BMI), well-integrated workers can now naturalize after 5 years of legal residence, instead of 8 years as before.
For those who demonstrate an exceptional level of integration, the timeline can be shortened to just 3 years.
Dual Citizenship Allowed
The most anticipated change is that Germany now accepts multiple citizenship. Those naturalizing no longer have to give up their original citizenship.
For Vietnamese people, this means it is possible to keep Vietnamese citizenship while also holding German citizenship.
Accompanying Conditions
In exchange for the shorter timeline, the value-based requirements have become stricter. Applicants need an appropriate level of German, must be able to support themselves financially, and must commit to the democratic constitutional order.
Anyone showing signs of racism or hatred will not be naturalized.
Significance for Vietnamese Workers in Germany
The new law makes Germany a more attractive destination for long-term settlement, since the path to citizenship is now clearer and faster. This is a natural next step after obtaining a settlement permit.
