Visa 186 is a permanent residence category sponsored by an Australian employer. Visa 186 does not use the points test but requires a specific job offer. This article explains it in detail.

Visa 186 là gì

Visa 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme visa) is a permanent visa granted to a skilled worker sponsored by a specific Australian employer. Unlike 189/190/491, which use the points test, visa 186 is based on a job offer and the employer’s direct requirement.

Visa 186 has three streams. The Direct Entry stream is for those without a work visa in Australia or who have not worked for a full 3 years. The Temporary Residence Transition stream is for those holding a 482 visa who have worked for 2 years. The Labour Agreement stream is for a category under a special labour agreement.

Requirements for visa 186

The Direct Entry stream requires: a profession on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), a formal Skills Assessment (except where exempt), at least 3 years of relevant experience, Competent English (IELTS 6.0 in each skill or equivalent), and under 45 years of age.

The Temporary Residence Transition stream requires: currently holding a 482 visa (SID) and having worked for the sponsoring employer for at least 2 years. This is a common path from the temporary 482 visa to permanent 186 without requiring a separate Skills Assessment.

When to choose visa 186

Choose visa 186 if you have an Australian employer willing to sponsor you for permanent residence. Visa 186 does not require the points test, which is an advantage for those with a strong profile but insufficient points to compete under the 189/190/491 categories.

Direct Entry requires a salary meeting the Annual Market Salary Rate that is at or above the Core Skills Income Threshold (76,515 AUD for the 2025-2026 financial year). Temporary Residence Transition is a longer but more flexible path for those already holding a 482 visa.

You should refer to official Home Affairs website and Home Affairs – Skilled visas to check current conditions.

Summary

Visa 186 is PR sponsored by an Australian employer, with three streams: Direct Entry (no work visa/<3 years), Temporary Residence Transition (via 482 for a full 2 years), and Labour Agreement. Requirements: CSOL profession, Skills Assessment (Direct Entry), 3+ years of experience, Competent English, under 45. Salary must be ≥ CSIT 76,515 AUD (2025-2026). No points test.
