Visa 491 for family allows a spouse and children to accompany the primary visa holder. Visa 491 for family carries benefits close to PR within the designated area. This article explains it in detail.

Visa 491 for family: basic benefits

Visa 491 for family allows adding a spouse and dependent children to the main applicant’s visa application. The whole family is granted a 5-year temporary 491 visa with the same conditions to live and work in the designated area.

The spouse is entitled to work without restriction in the designated area. Dependent children under 23 have access to the state’s public education system (free or reduced fee depending on the state). The whole family has access to Medicare.

Requirements for adding family members

To add family members to a 491 visa application, the applicant needs to: prove a legal marital relationship (spouse) or dependent relationship (children under 23, living with and financially dependent on the applicant), and declare them fully in the EOI and visa application.

An accompanying spouse needs to meet Functional English (IELTS 4.5 average or equivalent) or pay the English Language Charge. Children have no English requirement.

Family members and permanent residence

When the primary applicant becomes eligible to move from visa 491 to permanent 191, family members already holding a 491 visa are also transitioned to the 191. This is one of the major advantages of this category.

Relatives not accompanying from the start (Subsequent Entrants) can apply after the primary applicant already holds a 491 visa. The process is similar but must meet specific requirements. Regulations may be updated; check the official website.

You should refer to official Home Affairs website and Home Affairs – Skilled visas to check current conditions.

Summary

Visa 491 for family: a spouse and children under 23 accompany the primary applicant, sharing the 5-year temporary 491 visa. The spouse can work without regional restriction, children attend public school, and the family has Medicare. The spouse needs Functional English (IELTS 4.5+) or must pay the English Language Charge. When the primary applicant moves to 191, the family moves with them. Subsequent Entrants are available for those arriving later.
