Health and character requirements are two mandatory conditions for every Australian skilled visa application, in addition to points and skills assessment. Failing to meet these two requirements can result in rejection even if every other part of the application is strong.
Health Requirements for Australia’s Skilled Visa
The applicant and accompanying family members generally must undergo a health exam with a designated doctor. The goal is to ensure they do not carry a condition that would pose a public health risk or a significant burden on Australia’s health system.
Certain infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, are screened closely during the exam.
Character Requirements
Theo the Australian Department of Home Affairs, applicants need to meet character requirements, demonstrated through a police clearance certificate.
You generally need to submit police clearance certificates from any country where you have lived for 12 months or more in recent years.
Which Categories Does This Apply To
These two requirements apply to all skilled categories, including Skilled Independent (189), State Nominated (190), Regional (491), and employer-sponsored categories such as 482 and 186.
This is a general condition, regardless of whether the category is points-based or sponsorship-based.
Preparation Advice
You should apply for your police clearance certificate early and schedule your health exam at the right time to avoid it expiring. Any health issues should be disclosed transparently from the start.
These two requirements come along with the skills assessment step in the application. The M2W team will guide you through full preparation.
