German language proficiency is the deciding factor in which visa category you qualify for and how quickly you can move to Germany. Each type of settlement visa has a different language requirement, so understanding this clearly helps you plan your study in the right direction.
German Proficiency Levels Under the CEFR Framework
German is assessed under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from basic A1 to proficient C2. For settlement visas, the levels commonly required are A1, A2, and B1.
The most common and recognized certificates are issued by the Goethe-Institut and telc. Certificates from unrecognized providers have no value in a visa application.
Language Requirements by Visa Type
Theo the official Make it in Germany portal of the German Government, the requirement level varies significantly:
- Chancenkarte: at least A1 German, or B2 English;
- Visa for recognized qualifications: usually requires A2;
- Ausbildung: B1 required to begin vocational training;
- EU Blue Card and the experience-based IT category: German is not required for the visa.
Advice for Vietnamese workers
Even though some categories don’t require German, it remains key to integration, career advancement, and shortening the settlement pathway. Investing in learning early is almost always beneficial.
You should choose a path that leads to a recognized certificate from the start. The M2W team will advise on the German level required for your target visa category.
